For a American gateleg table of similar period in mahogany, see Christies, Important American Furniture, 18 & 19th January 2001, Lot 50. Mahogany and other imported exotic woods were in use in parts of America including Philadelphia by the turn of the 18th century, however, the extravagant cost of mahogany prohibited its widespread usage during this era.
