A scarce Georges Carette & Co., Nuremberg – painted tinplate clockwork twin-funnel gunboat with smoke-form winding key, German, circa 1910, of pressed and formed tinplate construction, the vessel has a cream and tan upper hull and deck above a contrasting red-painted lower hull, with black porthole detailing, the raised central superstructure carries two cylindrical funnels, the forward funnel incorporating the model's particularly distinctive integral smoke-form winding key, shaped to resemble a plume of smoke issuing from the funnel, deck is fitted with miniature armament, including the twin-barrelled forward gun mounting and single aft deck gun, together with small bridge and deck fittings, the stern carries a period Imperial German black-white-red tricolour ensign, beneath the hull are the external rudder and single propeller, the latter driven by the internal spring clockwork motor, approximately 190 mm long × 55 mm wide.* Literature: The highly distinctive configuration can be matched closely with a Carette gunboat recorded in the Christie's archive as a red-and-cream twin-funnel example with tan deck and 'smoke' key, measuring 7½ in. (19 cm) and dated circa 1910. The correspondence in size, colouring, funnel arrangement and unusual winding key provides particularly persuasive evidence for the Carette identification.
