A scarce pre-war Japanese painted tinplate clockwork 'Diving Submarine', manufactured by CK / Kuramochi, Japan, for the British export market, circa 1930s, of pressed and formed tinplate construction, the submarine is finished with a streamlined grey-blue hull, cream upper deck and conning tower, black waterline detail and contrasting red, brass-coloured and black fittings. The raised central conning tower incorporates four circular simulated ports with red surrounds, the deck is fitted with a gold-coloured revolving gun, curved periscope or air pipe, paired forward fittings, red and black deck caps and integral winding control, to the bow is an unusual serrated adjustment fitting, together with projecting hydroplanes beneath the hull, the stern carries the original external propeller assembly, broad vertical rudder and horizontal diving plane, the stern retains its original painted Union Jack, strongly characteristic of the British-market version. The rudder is impressed 'FOREIGN', approximately 330 mm long × 60 mm wide.
