A set of a rarely seen Chinese capucin ground European wheel engraved teacup and saucer, late Kangxi period, ø 6,5 - 10,5 cm
A set of a Chinese blue and white Batavia ware teacup and saucer, decorated with a squirrel on a vine, the exterior wheel engraved to the iron-brown ground glaze, with a Kangxi symbol mark and of late Kangxi period, ø 6,5 - 10,5 cm
With a label for Robert McPherson Antiques, stock number 25822
Wheel engraving is a technique of cutting deeply to remove the glaze completely, exposing the Chinese white porcelain. This technique is originally a German glass decorating technique that was suited to Chinese porcelain. The exposed white porcelain contrasted well with the iron-brown ground of the Batavia ware.
Source and reference: Robert McPherson Antiques
Condition: The teacup appears in poor condition:
- a U-section to one side and repaired with glue
The saucer appears in our opinion in good condition, except for some frits to the frontal rim and shallow frits to the back.
