A set of four George IV giltwood side chairs, circa 1825, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster, each with leaf and scroll carved cresting rail, caned seat and turned and reeded legs, each headed by anthemion, together with a set of four of early Victorian mahogany side chairs, circa 1840, each with leaf carved rail backs, padded seats and leaf carved tapering legs (8)

Provenance: Shefford Woodlands House, Berkshire

The proceeds of sale from this collection will be donated to a number of local charities.

The design for the giltwood chairs is illustrated and briefly described in Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster & London 1730-1840, Antique Collectors Club, Vol. I page 221 (plate 204)

Condition Report:
Gilt chairs: The surfaces with marks, knocks, scratches, abrasions and wear showing the underlying composition and timber in places, losses and flaking to the surface also, there are some areas of filler and also areas where the gilt has been refreshed and appears to be 'gold paint'. All interiors of the frame previously with supporting blocks, these have been removed - the frames are secure and stable, this were probably restored. the canework intact to all four chairs, this is almost certainly restored probably when the blocks were also removed, there are numerous tack marks to the undersides perhaps indicating that these chairs were upholstered at some point,
