[ translate ]

A set of ten Regency mahogany dining chairs, circa 1815, attributed to Gillows, each moulded top rail above a pierced bar splat, flanked by spirally reeded uprights, the loose cushion seat above a caned panel, on moulded sabre legs, each 82cm high, 44cm wide, 51cm deep

Condition Report:
Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use, some minor old chips. Some fading and some chairs with evidence of a brown surface wax/ varnish which bears scratches/ abrasions. This could be remedied by sympathetic cleaning and waxing/ polishing. The chairs are of solid useable structure. Several of the seat rails of the chairs are stamped with a small 'M' as an initial of the maker and is likely traceable to records of Gillows workman/ cabinet makers. The current upholstery to the loose cushions, which is later, with various fading and some stains. The caning of the seat panels is all intact and in good order. One caned panel is more indented to the centre. Several of the seat panels have been more recently re-done/ re-woven. The overall design of each chair matches eachother however there are some variations between the proportions when closely compared. It is therefore possible that this set are composed of more than one original set. One terminal at the front corner of one seat has a later dowel joint to secure and red wax filler visible. The seats rails are all original and solid mahogany. This is an attractive set of chairs. The carving is very well executed and consistent with the attribution to Gillows. There is no splicing to any of the legs.
