A settori 1962

[ translate ]

A settori 1962
Mixed media on canvas.
59.05 x 55.12 in.
Signed and dated lower left recto; signed, dated and titled on the reverse.

Although the beginnings of Accardi's career are clearly defined by belonging to Forma 1, an avant-garde group with a short life but with enormous influence for subsequent generations of artists, her path is difficult to locate within the well-defined contemporary movements to her. Accardi is close to the ideologies of the left of her years but remains shy towards any -ism. She has been a pioneer of Italian feminism together with her friend and art critic Carla Lonzi, but she moves away from the movement when it is at its peak, declaring herself essentially an artist and only 'accidentally' a woman. Her production was very heterogeneous, but with a spirit that has always been the real fil rouge of her experimentation: unmistakable and immutable colored signs on backgrounds that are renewed every time the painting changes setting.
'A settori' is a work that fits well into the artist's fully drawn maturity, who in the 1960s now plays a prominent role within the international situation of sign painting; but it is a work in which there are notable stylistic changes, in fact here a color with much more vivid and varied tones reappears, while the sign changes its structure.

Errata corrige: Casein tempera on canvas.
Provenienza/Provenance
Galleria Notizie, Torino, acquisto nel 1964.
Collezione privata, Torino.
