A sewing box by Johann Gottlob Fiedler

Palisander and stained wood veneers on oak corpus, ormolu mountings, replaced silk covers, mirror. Box with chamfererd edges on four tapering supports terminating in bronze sabots. The cover with a large pincushion with a mirror inside above three compartments. The outer faces inlaid, laurel wreaths hanging from rings, the angles with festoon motifs. All panels and mouldings with braided motifs, either in ormolu or in various coloured wood. Inscribed "J.G. Fiedler" in ink beneath the front apron. H 19, W 24, D 22 cm.
Berlin, around 1780 - 85.

Born in Liegnitz in 1735, the cabinetmaker Johann Gottlob Fiedler became one of the most important representatives of early classicism in Berlin. Many elements of his furniture designs are reminiscent of the work of the Neuwied manufactory, as is the perfection of his workmanship. The Prussian King Frederick William II chose him as court cabinetmaker in the year of his coronation.
