The Palace of Great Benevolence is among the six eastern palaces surrounding the inner court of the forbidden city (one out of 90 palaces). The Palace was built in 1420 and was the residence of imperial concubines during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. In 1654, the Kangxi Emperor (r. 1662–1722) was born in this hall.
