The original ancient Roman marble vase came from the Villa of Emperor Hadrian in Tivoli. It was popularised in part due to its illustrious provenance. Numerous copies were made throughout the 19th century, including many in cast iron. The vase model was produced in various sizes and patinas by the foundry in Gleiwitz / Silesia and by the one in Sayn near Koblenz.
