[ translate ]

Property from the Collection of the Late Paula and Don Gaston
Quiringh Gerritsz. van Brekelenkam
Zwammerdam circa 1622/30 - after 1669 Leiden
A soldier drinking with a young woman in an inn

indistinctly signed and dated: 1664
oil on panel
panel: 18 by 14 1/4 in.; 45.7 by 36.2 cm.
framed: 24 1/2 by 21 in.; 62.2 by 53.3 cm.

Condition Report:
The panel consists of a single plank and is flat, stable, and beveled on all 4 sides of the reverse. The image reads well beneath the varnish with the date visible in the lower right corner. A thin surface scratch measuring 1 inch on the wall hanging at center is visible but not distracting. No other repairs or retouching are visible to the naked eye. Under UV inspection, the varnish is thick and difficult to read through, but an older campaign of retouching is visible with small strokes in the background, concentrated in the upper right, and small spots on the man’s forehead and hand. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a simply carved stained wood frame with nicks and losses.
