A throwing club (Ula)
dating: circa 1900 provenance: Fiji, Wooden, with a big head shaped as a pumpkin, with longitudinal grooves, a big, semi-spherical button above, decorated with bone-inlaid stars. Cylindrical haft, the part under the head decorated en suite, handle embossed with undulated bands. See similar specimen in 'A Glossary of the Construction, Decoration and Use of Arms and Armor' by Stone, pages 646/647. Stone describes these clubs with very big head. Our club could also be a tribal chief club, given the fine execution. length 48 cm.
