£80

A tortoiseshell snuff box and cover, 19th century, of circular form, the cover inset with a watercolour on ivory portrait miniature depicting a classical maiden set within a gold-coloured metal border, 7cm diameter

Please note this lot is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018, Trevanion Auctioneers & Valuers LLP have applied for an exemption licence for the ivory in this lot Ref: EC91DT7F

More Information

The piece shows age related wear across all surfaces, including small scuffs and fine surface scratching. The cover shows losses to the turned edge of the upper rim, a chip to the lower rim, extensive scuffing and scratching to the underside, and fine scratching to the metal band. The portrait miniature shows craquelure to the blue background on the left hand side. On the right side, the blue appears to have adhered to the underside of the glass and lifted as a result. This may be evidence of previous failed restoration, however examination under UV suggests the blue is the original paint. The body of the box shows a vertical hairline crack (possibly a seam) to the side wall, but this does not appear to extend all the way through the wall. The base shows some age related cracking to the exterior, but again this does not appear to extend through to the interior base.
