A very large 144 cm Shiva Nataraja in bronze (1) - Bronze - India - Second half 20th century

A solid bronze statue of Shiva-Nataraja South Indian, 20th century. A very large bronze statue of Shiva as Nataraja, de Lord of the Dance. Depicted in the role of the creator, keeper and destroyer of the universe, all combined in a dance which forms the time cycle. The upper left hand is holding a drum which makes the first sound of creation, the left upper hand is holding a flame which destroys the cosmos. The lower right hand is in the abhya-mudra, meaning 'do not be afraid', cobra wrapped around the arm, while the lower left corner is in the gajahasta position, which means the elephant's trunk, the hand points to the raised right foot which indicates that refuge can be taken at the feet of Shiva. The right foot is placed firmly on the back of Apasmara, the demon of ignorance, looking at Shiva; a double lotus flower with stepped base below. Detailed, valuable items of jewellery embellish the body. Shiva's hair flies out during the dance and towards the centre of the crown there is the skull of Brahma, a crescent moon and the figure of Ganga Ma with a fish tail. There is a circle of flames representing the universe around the entire figure . Dimensions: 144 h x 110 w x 37 l Weight: 100 - 120 kg The item is in good condition with signs of age.
