A very rare and large Russian icon showing psalm 148 "Praise the Lord from the Heavens" (A call for the Universe to praise God), 19th centuryThe wooden panel with two sponki on the back. Tempera on gesso. At the centre, a representation of the heavenly sphere with Christ in Majesty surrounded by the four evangelists, cherubim and angels. Five registers of saints, kings and prophets on the left and right edges of the scene. The Mother of God and St. John the Baptist at the front of the top row. The lower scene shows the Garden of Eden. Highly detailed representation of the mountains and animals as they are cited in the Psalm ("Praise him, all wild animals and all cattle, crawling creatures and flying birds").
