A white metal Tibetan portable shrine or Gau Of ogee shape, the front embossed with eight auspicious emblems on a trailing vine, containing a small clay bodhisattva roundel, 13.5cm high; together with a copper inlaid brass prayer box of domed form with repousse foliage and beasts, 8.5cm dia.; and a small brass circular gau embossed with seated bodhisattva and containing a figure of Buddha, 6cm dia.; and a cast alloy prayer bell decorated with eight lotus petals above a band of kirtimukha masks, 9cm high. Provenance:
Acquired by Lt-Col Thomas Moore Kirkwood (1865-1933) while serving with the Indian Army in Tibet from 1903-04, thence by descent to the vendor.
