A wood figure of Idaten. 14th century
Standing on one leg running, wearing a Chinese-style armour and a helmet. Remains of polychromy. Mounted on a stand. Kiri box.
According to legend, Idaten was supposed to guard a sharitô containing Buddha's ashes, but he fell asleep. A demon saw the opportunity to steal the sharito and ran away with it. Awakend, Idaten persued the thief and thence became known as a swift runner.
