A wooded landscape with the meeting of David and Abigail, Jacques van der Wijen

Jacques van der Wijen
Amsterdam 1586 - 1638
A wooded landscape with the meeting of David and Abigail

oil on panel
panel: 21⅛ by 31⅝ in.; 53.7 by 80.3 cm (inclusive of ⅛ inch addition at each long edge)
framed: 28¼ by 39½ in.; 71.8 by 100.3 cm.

Condition Report:
The panel is uncradled, stable, and made of three horizontal boards. It has a slight convex, horizontal bow. It is beveled on three edges, and perhaps faintly beveled on the fourth. The painting is in good condition overall and reads well beneath a slightly yellowed varnish. The details appear well-preserved throughout, and some impasto, particularly in some of the foliage and landscape at right, is retained. There may be an old faint retouched scratch in the upper left sky that is not distracting. Inspection under UV reveals a slightly milky varnish. Some loose, cosmetic old retouching fluoresces faintly here and there in the sky. There may be some very fine strengthening to some of the darker foliage tones, although this is difficult to discern under UV. Only very few scattered small strokes of retouching elsewhere, for example one very thin line of retouching in the church tower above the bridge. Offered in a dark wood frame with a gilt inner liner.
