Condition of contents: Poor conditions. Foxing and stains. The first 50 pages are loose.

Leather cover. Pages from 35 to 38, 53, 59, 61 lack. Lacking and stains in the first 50 pages.

Condition of binding: light damage to extremities.

A book of prayer owned by the soldier A. Kirkwood regimental no 5816 of 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars which was sent in Pretoria from the year 1900 to fight in the Second Boer War.

As written by the soldier himself in the first blank page he stayed in South Africa in the year 1900, 1901, 1902. Another note indicates 1914-1919 in France. This means this book survived two wars.

The book was contained in the metal tin of chocolate distributed by Britain’s Queen Victoria to British troops deployed in South Africa Boer War in 1900.
