AARON HALEVI OF BARCELONA
(Attributed to). Sepher HaChinuch [“Book of Education” - exposition to the 613 precepts].
FIRST EDITION. Woodcut floriated heading.
ff. 179. Marginal worming repaired, old inscriptions. Modern blind-tooled calf. Lg. 4to. Vinograd, Venice 78.
Venice: Daniel Bomberg 1523
In his introduction, the author writes he intends for the work “to arouse the heart of [his] young son and youthful companions” to study each week the Mitzvoth contained in that week’s portion of the Torah. The Sepher HaChinuch is regarded today as one of the mainstays of rabbinic scholarship and is the subject of numerous commentaries. The identity of the Author of Sepher HaChinuch remains unclear. What is certain, is that the book was composed at the end of the 13th-century. See M. J. Heller, The Sixteenth Century Hebrew Book: An Abridged Thesaurus, Vol. 1 (2004) pp. 160-161.
