LOT NOTES
Born in Tyumen, Siberia, Abraham Walkowitz grew up on New York's Lower East Side and studied at the Acad?mie Julian in Paris. There he met Isadora Duncan, who became a lifelong subject. By 1912 he was part of Alfred Stieglitz's circle at the 291 gallery, alongside Marin, Hartley and Dove, and he showed in the landmark 1913 Armory Show. In this monumental harbor scene, a crew of fishermen in caps and heavy boots haul and sort their nets on a wharf. Their massive, simplified figures recall C?zanne, whom Walkowitz admired, and moored schooners and clapboard houses line the water behind them. The painting passed through two of New York's leading dealers in American modernism, ACA Gallery and Zabriskie Gallery. Virginia Zabriskie lent it to the Provincetown Art Association's 1964 Golden Anniversary exhibition and the national tour that followed.
