The first edition in English, containing some of the earliest scientific observations of the Amazon region and its native inhabitants. The book comprises the accounts of Cristóbal de Acuña on the Amazon, of Acarete du Biscay on the Río de la Plata, and of Jean Grillet and Francois Bechamel in Guiana. Acuña’s account was first published in 1641, but immediately suppressed by the Spanish government in order to keep it secret from the Portuguese.
