ADRIEN DELORME (1722 1791)

Received Master in 1748
MEUBLE ORATOIRE France, Louis XV period, circa 1760
Fir tree frame, amaranth and light wood veneer, gilt bronze and iron
Stamp : DELORME H. 77 cm, L. 52 cm, D. 30 cm In
the 18th century, a few rare Parisian carpenters and cabinetmakers, among the most talented, managed to distinguish themselves from their colleagues by creating their own style, which today represents their true signature.
This is notably the case of Adrien Delorme who developed a type of marquetry that is specific to him. The oratory piece of furniture that we present, offers a herringbone veneer background characteristic of his work.
Indeed, we find this same marquetry, with or without rinceaux, on certain pieces of furniture stamped or attributed to Delorme: a small tilting table sold at Sotheby's in New York on October 28, 1978, lot 85; a three-drawer chiffonnière table sold at Sotheby's in Monaco on February 7, 1982, lot 61; a two-leaf chest of drawers presented by our firm (December 5, 2018, lot 124); a chest of drawers with a gilded bronze decoration typical of certain BVRB chests of drawers, illustrated in A. Pradère,
Les ébénistes français de Louis XIV à la Révolution, Tours, 1989, p.180, fi g.164; as well as a secretary which was sold in Paris in December 1966 and which is nowadays in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Bordeaux.
The word "oratory" first refers to a chapel, or one of its parts. From the
15th century onwards, it was applied to the furniture that furnishes it. Sort of prayer-
God, this oratory was intended for a private room and placed in front of an altarpiece or devotional image. Automatically translated by DeepL. To see the original version, click here.
