Publisher:Atlas [Indicia: Current Detective Stories, Inc.]
Date Published: December, 1952
Description:

CGC certified: VG (4.0). Cream to off-white pages. Cover: Bill Everett. Stories and art: Stan Lee, Carmine Infantino, George Roussos, Hy Rosen, Don Perlin, Manny Stallman. GPAnalysis: No recorded sales in this grade. A 4.5 sold for $264 in September 2020.

A boneyard babe cringes in terror as a pair of groping skeletal hands advances. Her red dress is a flag of victimhood in the semiotics of pre-Code horror, a kiddie version of the canard that female assault victims were "asking for it" because of their outfits. Pre-Code horror comics were like a drain-strainer in the basin of postwar American consciousness, a place for seedy ideas and impulses to gather and fester. Unique among art forms, the worse these comics got, the better they became — disreputability was their chief virtue.

"The women who are targets of male skeletons, ghouls, vampires, or your average strolling psychopath are marked by the red dresses they wear. They may, of course, be regarded as scarlet women of easy virtue... but the red is even more sinister than that: Dressed in the color of blood, a woman is an appointed, permitted human sacrifice." —Jim Trombetta, The Horror! The Horror! Comic Books the Government Didn't Want You To Read! Abrams: 2010, p. 202.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
