Title: ADVENTURES INTO TERROR Nos. 7 and 17: Lot of Two Comics
Place Published:
Publisher:Atlas [Indicia: Current Detective Stories, Inc.]
Date Published: December, 1951
Description:

#7: Good (2.0). Touch of spine roll, small chips at mid-spine and bottom right corner of cover, nicks and creases, a few rusty specks to staples, a few transverse tears to spine affecting covers and pages. Cream to tan pages. Press and clean to VG-? Cover: George Tuska (sidebar art by Joe Maneely). Art: Basil Wolverton, Harry Lazarus, Joe Maneely, Allen Bellman, Hy Rosen. GPAnalysis: None in this grade. A 1.8 sold for $45 in July 2018.

#17: Fair/Good (1.5). Cover detached, small chip to front cover at spine crown, right corners a bit curled, a few dogeared nicks, creases, edges of covers toned (most noticeably on inside covers), wide but shallow chip to margin of one page. Cream to light tan pages. Cover: San Kweskin (sidebar art by Carl Burgos). Scripts: Carl Wessler, others. Art: Gil Kane, Joe Sinnott, Ken Landau, Sam Kweskin, Jim Mooney. GPAnalysis: None in this grade. A 3.0 sold for $110 in May 2021.

Joe Maneely's "Going Down!" features an elevator that goes straight to Hell (a hell-evator?), as well as a guy who blows himself up conducting experiments in science and sorcery (Dr. Doom prototype?). Meanwhile, Basil Wolverton's "Where Monsters Dwell" features some delightfully bizarre artwork, including a guy whose mug gets melted like a campfire marshmallow.

The highlight of #17 is Jim Mooney's "Red as a Lobster!," in which a guy who gets his kicks boiling lobsters alive gets the same treatment. At first it seems like a swipe from Graham Ingels' "Half-Baked!" (Tales from the Crypt # 40), in which a guy who tortures lobsters gets split down the middle and roasted alive. Sadly, Gaines and Feldstein appear to have done the swiping: this story precedes the EC version by over two years.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com.
