AFRICAN BENIN EDO BRONZE / BRASS HEAD OF QUEEN

[ translate ]

A very good Benin style bronze (brass composition) sculptural head of a queen. The work is very well done. It is not signed/visibly marked. Benin bronzes, like this example, were created from at least the 16th century onwards in the West African Kingdom of Benin, by specialist guilds working for the royal court of the Oba in Benin City. The metal composition of this piece is consistent with brass, however "Benin" examples like this have traditionally been referred to as bronzes. Note: The work is quite heavy. Measures: H 13" x W 9" x D 7" Provenance: Property of a private corporate collection.
