AFTER DIEGO VELASQUEZ (SEVILLE 1599-1660 MADRID)
Portrait of the infante Marguerite Thérèse
oil on canvas laid on panel
72.5 x 58 cm

After the original painting in the Louvre, Paris

Portrait of the infante Marguerite Thérèse (1651-1673) completed in 1653/4. The painting depicts the eldest daughter of King Philip IV of Spain and his second wife, Mariana of Austria.

The painting is remarkable for it's realism and attention to detail. Velázquez has portrayed the young princess with great sensitivity, capturing her delicate features and shy expression. Her pose, with one hand resting on a table and the other holding a fan, is elegant and refined.

The background of the painting is composed of a deep black, which serves to highlight the figure of the princess and create a sense of intimacy. Velázquez has used a limited colour palette, with shades of black, grey, and white predominating, which gives the painting a subtle tonality and a feeling of understated elegance.

In 1666, she married Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor, and became the Empress of the Holy Roman Empire.

Marguerite Thérèse was known for her beauty and intelligence. She was also deeply religious and was devoted to the Catholic faith. Her marriage to Leopold I was arranged for political reasons, and it was a successful union that produced four children.

Marguerite Thérèse was also a patron of the arts and commissioned several important works, including a series of tapestries that depicted scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. She was a significant figure in the court of the Holy Roman Empire and was respected for her intelligence and diplomatic skills.

The painting is considered one of Velázquez's finest portraits and a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque painting.Click here to share:
