AFTER HIERONYMOUS BOSCH, 19TH OR 20TH CENTURY
THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS

oil on panel, a triptych
center panel: 59 by 55⅜ in.; 149.9 by 140.7 cm.
side panels: 59 by 24 in.; 149.9 by 61 cm.
overall: 62½ by 114¼ in.; 158.8 by 290.2 cm.

Condition Report:
The large panels are flat and are supported on the backs by some wooden battens. The central panel has three vertical and three horizontal battens, and the wings have two vertical and three horizontal battens. Overall, the paint layers of all of the panels are stable with no significant losses or instabilities. The images read clearly and the colors are vibrant. There are some minor scattered spots of discoloration here and there and very few losses, two of the most noticeable being very small spots of loss above the head of Adam in the left panel. There are a few very small knots/raised spots to the panel scattered, for example in the upper right and upper left corners of the central panel and in the upper center of the right panel, and there are some thin retouched scratches on the right panel including one vertical line near center of the left edge and one diagonal in the lower right corner. There are small scattered retouches here and there throughout, many of which are concentrated in shadows and many of which are visible to the naked eye. Over the surfaces of all of the panels there is a brushy and faint layer of gloss or paint of a reddish/orange tint that is almost translucent. Inspection under UV reveals a thick and brushy varnish as well as the scattered aforementioned retouches. Under UV light the reddish/orange layer also fluoresces throughout. All of the panels have simply carved dark frames with some scattered losses. The wings connect to the center through modern metal hinges.
