He eschewed sentimentality and moral allusion in painting and was a leading proponent of the credo art for arts sake. He is also considered the founder of Tonalism. Just Becquet, 1829 to 1907, was a French sculptor and musician. In the late 1850s, he became a friend of American painter James McNeill Whistler during his bohemian Paris days.
