The complete set, comprising 20 engravings by Jan Collaert II, Theodoor Galle and others, circa 1591, very fine to very good impressions of the first states, from the first edition published by Philips Galle in Antwerp, most plates on paper with Gothic P watermarks, a few with indistinct watermarks and countermarks, each unframed
each plate: approx. 200 by 265mm 7⅞ by 9⅝in
each sheet: approx. 228 by 293mm 9 by 11½in

Condition Report:
With wide margins, generally in good condition, occasional handling creases and areas of surface soiling particularly at the lower right corner where leafed, occasional areas of thinning towards the sheet edges, areas of pale discoloration in places, pen and ink numbering in the upper margins, three plates with a few made up areas touched in with pen and ink, unframed.

Imperfections to individual plates include:

Title Page – a paper defect in South America, small area of paper thickening upper left corner, the surface soiling in the lower margin naturally more marked in the title page, a small water stain in the lower margin

Plate 1 - a short repaired tear extending from lower edge at left, approx. 4.8cm, unobtrusive, fine, black chalk additions to borderline, surface soiling lower margin

Plate 2 – a small stain in the right margin, minor, white adhesive-staining in the lower left corner of subject

Plate 3 – a tiny rust spot in the third arch to the left, two tiny brown spots in right margin

Plate 4 - thinning at upper corners with a tiny associated loss upper right corner

Plate 7 - soiling lower right corner (long vertical printer’s crease left margin inherent to production)

Plate 8 – a tiny pale stain in the left margin, paper thinning at the upper sheet corners, the extreme upper right corner tip lost, handling creases and soiling lower right

Plate 10 - a pin hole at upper right associated with thinning, minor soiling (printer’s ink?) in the upper and right margins

Plate 11 - An embedded fibre upper right corner

Plate 12 - an area of pale staining, three tears with associated skilfully made up and touched in areas in the lower centre and right part of the subject, the longest extending from lower edge measuring approx. 5.5 cm., with associated fine perforations in places, residues of printer’s ink in the lower right corner

Plate 13 - an area of pale staining, two small, skilfully made up areas and repaired tears in the lower part of the subject, touched in with pen and ink

Plate 14 – a short crease upper right, a small discoloured printer’s crease in the upper margin, handling dirt lower right corner

Plate 15 – a diagonal printer’s crease at left of subject (inherent to production) with very minor abrasion, minor thinning at the upper corner, handling creases at the lower right corner

Plate 16 - thinning at the upper left corner (a long vertical printer’s crease left margin inherent to production)

Plate 17 - a very minor damp stain at upper left

Plate 18 – a very small brown stain in the boat lower right, a very minor damp stain at lower sheet edge

Plate 19 - an area of pale staining, a few small, skilfully made up and touched in areas in the lower part of the subject
