AFTER JUSTUS SUSTERMANS OIL ON CANVAS H 28.25" W 21.25" PORTRAIT OF PRINCE WALDEMAR CHRISTIAN OF DENMARK (1603-1647) Half length, in ceremonial armor, blue and white sash. Shield formed label- REDHEFFER & KOCH, St. Louis Missouri, on verso, top of stretcher bar. 19th c. gilt carved wood filigree frame. Unsigned. Stretcher inscribed on verso: Painted by Mrs. Joel Hart, Rome, 1880". Cardboard backing with label expressing what is written on the stretcher.
Condition Report: early 20th c. reline. When viewed under UV light, there is no evident damage to the canvas that would have required its relining. Appears to retain original/early varnish. Minor overpaint along edges where canvas meets frame. Minor inpainting of craquelure in lower left corner. Minor losses to frame as evident in photograph.
