Condition Report:
This painting has restoration and Sotheby's recommends that the interested party review this piece in person prior to bidding.
Canvas lined. Appears to retain its original stretcher, keys, and frame with some replaced hardware. Scattered inpaitning and minor cracquelure throughout, remnants of aged varnish causing discoloration, slight blistering to the middle ground, and evidence of prior cleaning. The proper right side with a 1 by 1 -inch square repair and two 1-inch secured tears in the sky, inpainting to the face of the man turning back towards the general and a 3 by 6-inch rectangular repair that runs 5 inches up and 4 inches towards the center, below the coattails of the man in white. Some abrasions to the middle ground, a 2-inch repair proper left of the man on horseback, a 2-inch repair above the man in the red waistcoat, a 5-inch repair to the flag above Rochambeau's head and a 1.5-inch tear to the brim of General Washington's tricorner hat.
