A Bronze Group Okimono (Table Ornament) of Two Contending Tigers
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 20th/early 19th century
Naturalistically and skilfully cast depicting two ferocious, snarling cats in battle, one tiger on all fours fending off its foe standing on its hind feet, clambering over its back from behind with its front paws resting on the rear haunches, their striped coats carefully patinated in contrasting shades of brown, their eyes gilt with black pupils, signed on the belly of the upright tiger in a rectangular reserve Gyoko saku. One tiger: 25cm x 47cm (9 7/8in x 18½in); second tiger: 24cm x 59cm (9½in x 23¼in). (2).
