Rare Early 19th c. 9K Gold Mounted Lacquered Papier Mache Snuff Box, lid with embossed chalk or plaster seal of Alexander I of Russia (reigned 1815-1825) designed by sculptor Jean-Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822), hand written note on lid interior with history: 'This box was presented by Alexander I Emperor of Russia to Politika Russian Minister to the U.S. (Pyotr Ivanovich Poletika) and by him to Judge Bushrod Washington (Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, 1798-1829) at Mt. Vernon and by the Judge to his nephew Col. Geo. Corbin Washington (US Congressman, 1827-33 and 1835-37) and by him to his son Lewis William Washington (hostage of John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry and later prosecution witness in Brown's trial)', 4" diam., 3/4" high. Minor stains to seal, interior craquelure, surface wear to base.
