ALS LETTER FROM COMMODORE ISAAC HULL (1773-1843) TO US
Letter entirely in the hand of Isaac Hull, later victor in command of the USS Constitution vs. HMS Guerriere in the battle of August 19, 1812, addressed to "Midshipman AD Stoddard of the US Navy, New Bedford", with a June 30 Boston postmark, reading: "Chesapeake, 30th June, 1809. Sir, I have received your letter of 27th expressing your wish to leave the Navy. I have it not in my power to accept your resignation, but I should recommend your making application to the Honorable Secretary of the Navy and there is no doubt but you will be indulged. As your application will be from New Bedford, you can say to him that you had leave of absence from me to visit your friends. Your plan will be to enclose your warrant to the department beging (sic) their acceptance of it which they will do provided they concent (sic) to indulge you otherwise they will send it back and grant you a furlough. It will be well for you to state your reasons for wishing to leave the service whatever they may be. I am respectfully In your behalf, Isaac Hull. (Mr. AB Stoddard). 9 3/4" x 15 1/2" sheet with 1806 watermark (illegible maker). Folded, loss to flap ends (no text). Fold through 'I' of Isaac.
A.D. Stoddard re-appears as the owner of three ships in the "New Bedford Directory" of 1836, , all docked in Fairhaven, Mass.: Bark "Pactolus" at 288 tons, Bark "Arab" at 275 tons & Bark "Alto" at 197 tons.
Found in the papers of Thomas Tileston (1793-1864), wealthy merchant-mariner of NYC.
