The second Aldine edition of the bestselling glossary of Boccaccio, enlarged. Alunno was part of a coterie of humanists, including Ludovico Dolce, Pietro Aretino, and Girolamo Ruscelli, who championed the Italian language. Folio (302 x 200mm). Woodcut author portrait on title page, woodcut Aldine device on final page (occasional spots, light worming to the bottom of first few leaves). Modern vellum over pasteboard reusing a 15th-century Italian vellum manuscript leaf, title lettered along lower edges in an early hand (boards splitting, wear to edges, original manuscript text mostly worn away). Provenance: some early marginalia – Biblioteca Comune di Ravenna (stamp, with release note) – Philo Melvin and Aletheia Hall Buck (1877-1950 and 1878-1952, a founder of the first ever department of comparative literature, at UW-Madison, and his wife; gift inscription to:) – “Prof. Ursini.”
