A.M. Cassandre (Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron) 1901–1968 Dubo-Dubon-Dubonnet vintage poster

[ translate ]

Caption Brief: This 1932 version of the "Dubonnet" is exquisitely colored, with the soft primary-color backgrounds of red-blue-yellow corresponding to the emotional/psychological state of the drinker. In addition, its evocation of the wine and its bottle are particularly three-dimensional in their rendering, and the coloration of the border all contribute to a superb combination of two- and three-dimensional perspectives. Cassandre plays cleverly on the brand name, moving from "Dubo" (suggesting "doubt") to "Dubon" ("good") before arriving at "Dubonnet".

1932

19⅜ h × 45¾ w in (49 × 116 cm)

Alliance Graphique, Paris

Provenance: Collection of William Crouse

Condition: Cond B+: with touch-ups, tears, creases, and points of discoloration. Work has not been examined out of frame but is fully visible. Framed behind acrylic measuring 23.5 × 49.875 inches.

Literature: Brown & Reinhold, p. 37; Cassandre/Suntory, p. 32A; Word & Image, p. 81; Modern Poster, p. 160; PAI-LXXVII-174
