Title: AMAZING ADVENTURES No. 4

Publisher:Ziff-Davis [Indicia: Ziff-Davis Publishing Co.]
Date Published: July-August, 1951
Description:

VG (4.0). Spine stress, ¼" split at top spine, 1" split at bottom spine, creasing to bottom edge of front cover and bottom corner of back cover, three small scrapes to back cover that penetrate all the way through, soil spots to margins of a few pages, faintly-penciled distributor's mark ("7/6/8") to "Z" in "AMAZING." Cream to off-white pages. This mag is on the borderline between 3.5 and 4.0, and we went with the higher grade due to its strong eye appeal. Cover: Allen Anderson. Scripts: Jerry Siegel, uncredited others. Art: Leonard Starr, Henry Sharp, Dan Barry, Ross Andru?, Paul Parker, Murphy Anderson. Overstreet: "Classic cover." GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $414 in April 2019.

A metal man makes love to frail flesh as a creepy green alien orchestrates the action on Allen Anderson's cover illustrating Leonard Starr's "Adonis 2 PX-89" (aka "Invasion of the Love Robots"). One wonders what anti-comics critic Gershon Legman would have made of this bizarre image of lovemaking by mechanical proxy? Legman lambasted comic book publishers, editors, writers and artists as "degenerates" who "belong in jail" in his 1949 screed "Love and Death: A Study in Censorship." The crux of Legman's beef was the hypocrisy, as he saw it, of America's embrace of fantasy violence and rejection of healthy eroticism. Besides being a cultural gadfly, Legman was a sexologist who is said to have created the first vibrating "pleasure wand" for ladies, a gizmo with a curious kinship to this mag's stainless steel lover.

A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
