AMEDEO GENNARELLI (Naples, 1881-Paris, 1966).
"Horse and male head", Art Deco figure.
Terracotta.
Signed.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Size: 33 x 80 x 11 cm.
Amedeo Gennarelli offers us a terracotta that is ascribed in its entirety to the Art Deco movement, an artistic style that emerged in 1920 and whose influence continued until the middle of the 20th century in some countries. It sought to renew all disciplines, championing the value of the technological progress of the time and the new sciences of the day.
Although Amedeo Gennarelli was born in Naples, he soon moved to Paris, where he remained active and became internationally known, particularly through the platform provided by his participation in the Salon des Artistes Français, where he took part from 1913 to 1936. He was a pupil of Francesco Jerace, a painter and sculptor from Naples, and was inspired by Rodin's sculpture. Gennareli was known for his beautiful female nudes, which he produced using different materials: marble, terracotta, bronze, and for his Art Deco bronzes with a Symbolist flavour, where he specialised in the use of sfumattos. During his lifetime he received many medals and honours.
