AMEDEO GENNARELLI (Naples, 1881-Paris, 1966).
"Woman Sleeping".
Marble.
Signed.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture in the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Size: 32 x 13 cm.
This delicate sculpture represents the figure of a naked woman on a rocky mound. The extraordinary quality of the piece we present here, together with its perfect anatomy, its reclining position and even the veil of mystery it gives off, allow us to relate it to other paradigmatic examples of its time.
Although Amedeo Gennarelli was born in Naples, he soon moved to Paris, where he remained active and became internationally known, particularly through his participation in the Salon des Artistes Français, where he took part from 1913 to 1936. He was a pupil of Francesco Jerace, a painter and sculptor from Naples, and was inspired by Rodin's sculpture. Gennareli was known for his beautiful female nudes, which he produced using different materials: marble, terracotta, bronze, and for his Art Deco bronzes with a Symbolist flavour, where he specialised in the use of sfumattos. During his lifetime he received many medals and honours.
