AMERICAN BUFFALO POTTERY RALPH STUART HAND-PAINTED BLUEBIRD CERAMIC ARTICLES, LOT OF TWO, comprising a light yellow shaving mug having hand-painted polychrome bluebird and floral motif and "A.W.B." in gilt with gold rim and handle and a butter tub with hand-painted polychrome bluebird decoration on interior and exterior, signed "R.[alph] Stuart" with gilded handle and rim. Green printed marks on base "BUFFALO / CHINA" with date marks 1917 and 1925. Together with a 3 7/8" butter insert having gilded band decoration. Three pieces total. Buffalo Pottery Company, Buffalo, New York. First quarter 20th century.

Condition: Mug undamaged except for minor losses to gilt decoration on handle; tub with minor flake on underside; and insert with flake to edge.

Size: Butter tub 5 1/4" D.

Provenance: From the estate of Holton Rosenquist, Bradford, IL.Catalogue Note: The presentation shaving mug was made for Arthur W. Bartlett, founder of the Bartlett Oil Company of Irving, NY. The decoration is attributed to Ralph Stuart, but it is unsigned.
Stuart was head of the Buffalo Pottery art department from 1903 to 1942.
