AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SILVER HILTED LION HEAD POMMEL SABER.

Straight single-edged blade with 4 short partial-fullers on each side. Four Roman heads stamped between letters of "A N D R E A" on one side and "F A R A R A" on the other. Four slot silver guard with missing branch on right side. Front of guard marked with "Bailey" hallmark in a sunken cartouche. Ivory grip with single band of decorative silver. Two-piece cast silver lion-pommel nearly identical to one attributed to Gilman of New Hampshire on page 415 of "American Silver-Hilted, Revolutionary and Early Federal Swords: Volume II" by Daniel D. Hartzler. CONDITION: Blade shows a dark brown patina, some pitting and many "battle" nicks to cutting edge. Hilt is quite tight to blade. Guard with broken and absent branch on right side, retains pewter patina with some darker areas. A 1" square section on bottom right side of grip has been replaced during its period of use or when made, as the patina matches perfectly and age cracks are present. Pommel with polished high areas and darker patina in protected areas. An attractive silver hilted lion pommel sword. Blade Length: 32 - 1/2" Overall Length: 39"
