(AMSTERDAM, 1946).

Ha Lachma - Pesach in Dezen Tijd [“Passover in These Times…”]

Dutch text by Rabbi Aaron Schuster. Printed on light tan pages.

pp. 16. Original amarillo wrappers. 8vo.

Amsterdam, 1946.

The first post-Holocaust Passover.

Issued by the Chief Rabbinate of Netherlands, this is a guide to the appropriate observance of the Passover holiday, providing for de Joodsche Huisvrouw (“the Jewish housewife”) lists of medicinal and food products that are Kosher for Passover. Also provides instructions for purifying kitchenware, as well as recipes and menu suggestions for the Festival - especially practical at the time, given the severely limited availability of food due to severe postwar rationing.

This little booklet is a moving tribute to the resilience of the Dutch Jewish community, that so soon after the conclusion of war, which took such an inordinately heavy toll (only 20% of a prewar total of 140,000 survived), Jewish life was reconstituted with such devotion to detail.

The author concludes his foreword: De zegen van het Joodsche leven, trotsch al zijn moeilijkheden, komt van God (“The blessing of Jewish life, with all its difficulties, comes from God.”).

Amsterdam-born Rabbi Aaron Schuster (1907-94) graduated in classics from Amsterdam University and also studied at the Ashkenazi Rabbinical Seminary of Amsterdam. Upon his ordination he was appointed one of the communal rabbis of Amsterdam. In 1943 he was deported to Bergen-Belsen and was one of a bare handful of Dutch rabbi to survive the Holocaust. In 1955 he was appointed Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam, holding the position until 1972, when he settled in Israel. The synagogue in the south of Amsterdam that he regularly attended is named in his honor to this day (RAS, also known as Obrechtsjoel).
