AN AFSHAR 'MEDALLION AND BOTEH' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1880
AN AFSHAR 'MEDALLION AND BOTEH' RUG, SOUTH PERSIA, CIRCA 1880
"There is a hexagonally-shaped central medallion, with pendants, filled with diagonal rows of variably-coloured boteh on an indigo field. The red field that surrounds the central medallion contains a variety of diamond-shaped and floral fillers with additional vertical rows of jagged shrub forms with white outlines emerging from triangular-shaped vases. There are 3 main borders, the widest with repeated arrow-shapes on a yellow ground, the others formed of flower and leaf-meander patterns. The knots are symmetrical. Warps are in greyish wool, and wefts in dyed red wool. Weft-wrapped soumak panels occur at both ends with modified animal-head forms (rams horns) in green with alternating white crosses on a red ground. Finished ends are plaited in bundles of warps. The selvedges are mostly original in over-wrapped multicoloured bands." (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 22). Approximately 143 x 117cm
