AN AFSHAR 'STAR PATTERN' BAG FACE, SOUTH PERSIA, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY

“Two horizontal rows of octagonal stars, 3 in each row, lie within the compartments of a white rectangular lattice. Within two of the lattice compartments, on the right edge only, is a vertical stripe of oblique banding in various colours. The single border is made up of reciprocal triangles in red and green. The slit panels have a chequerboard design in two colours, each panel different. There are two guard rows above the panels, one in alternating green and red and reciprocal triangles in blue and ivory. The binding at the top is in brown and apricot twining reversed in slope on the back. The top end is in red wool and folded over and hemmed. Although the majority of the surface of the bag is in soumak weave in both simple and countered forms, the bottom of the bag face is in plain weave with both warps and wefts in red-dyed wool. The sides are overcast in bands of various colours but are probably not original. The back of the bag is missing.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 68). Approximately 36 x 46cm

The Collection of Professor Paul R Benjamin
For an introduction to the collection, please see Lot 193 in this sale

LITERATURE:

Benjamin, Paul, South Persian Rugs, Bags and Saddle Covers: from the collection of Paul R Benjamin, 3rd ed., 2004, pp. 70-71

“This type of Afshar soumak bag is quite common, and although the colours are faded in this example, it is still an attractive piece. The red wefts and warps may indicate another Afshar group.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p. 68)
