AN AFSHAR/SIRJAN SINGLE BAG, SOUTH PERSIA, LAST THIRD 19TH CENTURY
AN AFSHAR/SIRJAN SINGLE BAG, SOUTH PERSIA, LAST THIRD 19TH CENTURY
“The central panel has a lattice design, each compartment containing stemmed flowers connected to a small central trellis. Only one lozenge of the lattice has the complete pattern. The main border has a typical floral meander. The two guards are similar with a two-colour reciprocal cross and bar pattern except at the top of the bag where the outer guard is in a running dog pattern. The knotting is symmetrical, the warps are in ivory, the wefts in wool dyed red in two shoots. Above there is a further band of decoration in chevron twill (partly missing). It has adjacent guards of two rows of countered twining. No closure region with slit panels is present. The remains of the ends are in plain weave folded over and hemmed. The bottoms and sides of the bag have plaited edges in red and light blue. The back of the bag is in kelim weft-faced plain weave in red. There is a single decorated band of chevron shaped twill with twined guards similar to the one on the front of the bag.” (Benjamin, op.cit., p.66). Approximately 32 x 42cm
