LOT 0105

AN AMERICAN 25-BORE DOUBLE BARRELLED PERCUSSION

[ translate ]

AN AMERICAN 25-BORE DOUBLE BARRELLED PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN, 30.25inch barrels with brass sights, border and scroll engraved back action locks signed J. WALSH RICHMOND VIRGN, in Gothic script, half tiger-stripe stock, steel mounts. Generally worn and patinated, missing screw, left hammer repaired. James Walsh operated from 60 Main Street Richmond Virginia, principally a retailer rather than a maker Walsh smuggled Colt Revolvers into the Confederate States during the American Civil War and was also believed to have been contracted for the conversion of Confederate arms to percussion, their maintenance and repair. The rather crude brass rear sight, basic repair to the left hammer and brazed swivel mounts suggest it may have been used at the defence of Richmond.
