AN ARCHAIC BRONZE OVAL BOWL WITH RING HANDLE (HE)
Eastern Zhou dynasty, 6th-5th century B.C.
Finely decorated with a wide band of interlocking stylized serpents above a roll of triangles pointing downwards, the thinly cast bowl of oblate profile rising from flat base to a short flared mouth, a plain, faceted loop handle on the long side, the attractive encrustations of blue, green, and red gracefully scattered inside and out, with imprints of textiles still remain near the base.
4 1/2in (11.7cm) wide; 4 3/8in (11.3cm) depth across handle
Footnotes:
東周 帶把青銅鉌

Provenance:
Blitz Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, Amsterdam, April 18, 2005

來源:
Blitz Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art,阿姆斯特丹,2005年4月18日

In typical Eastern Zhou form and decoration, the present example is especially fine in casting with a perfect proportion.

Compare the very similar bronze he in the collection of the Department of Archaeology, Peking University, illustrated in Arthur M. Sackler Museum of Art and Archaeology at Peking University: A Selection (1998), Beijing, 1998, p. 111, no. 63.

A group of closely related bronze oval bowls with various decorations and loop handles, in the collection of the National Museum of Asian Art, Smithsonian, is illustrated by J. So in Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, New York, 1995, pp. 290-311.

Condition Report: PLEASE NOTE: This report describes, but may not be limited to, major condition issues for the lot. In good, original condition with no break, no crack, no restoration. The design is clear and easy to read. One casting seam on each short side of the bowl can be observed on the exterior. Minute chips to the lip but does not interfere with viewing. Small casting flaw to the ring handle. Encrustations of textile imprints preserved near the base and on the flat base. Excellent example of this type.
