AN EAGLE-GUL GROUP I CARPET, SOUTHWEST TURKESTAN
AN EAGLE-GUL GROUP I CARPET, SOUTHWEST TURKESTAN
17th/18th century
silk wefts
approximately 224 by 172 cm; 7ft. 4in., 5ft. 8in.
Condition Report:
Fantastic wool, lustrous and velvety. Densely woven. Top as woven is the narrower end, width is 161cm at the top; left hand side is 226cm, right hand side is 219cm. Knot count 8/cm vertically and 8/cm horizontally. Assymetric knot open to the left. Very slight depression, very even tension generally - a masterful weave. Lower right hand corner looks as if it might have been repaired at some stage? - but wool and weave quality suggest possibly near contemporary with rug. (see close-up image on web). Original checkered side cords, Plain weave ends rather irregularly cut and with some nicks. Lower left hand corner has slight stiffness in plainweave and is darkened. The piece would probably benefit from a careful professional clean. NB the secondary narrow guard stripes which flank the S-rosettes in this example are in fact closer to the companion piece than suggested in the footnote; these may have been woven as a pair?
