AN EARLY VICTORIAN PAINTED WOOD TRUNCHEON FOR THE HUNDRED OF WHALESBONE
DATED 1841
painted and gilt with crown above Royal Coat of Arms and inscribed HUNDRED of WHALESBONE about a cartouche with two dolphins and with date and named for Wm JOLLY, verso Arms of the Earls of Abergavenny, above a ribbed grip handle stamped JG to the end
46.5cm long

NB An annual presentation was made to the Constable
Cf. a similar example for the Hundred of Whalesbone, dated 1843 and named for Fredk Boore was sold in these rooms, 12th May 2021, lot 448
Condition Report:
Rubbing and wear, losses to the surfaces, scratches, indentations
Split to the side of the handle, dirt and discolouration from handling
There is a drilled hole to take a leather martingale - this is not present with the lot and has never been with Dreweatts
JG nicely impressed to one end, the end here is dark in colour
